Nuclear Medicine

Nuclear Medicine is a medical branch which ensures imaging any region of the body with the use of radioactive substances and the treatment of diseases; principally, it is a functional imaging method. Thanks to the radio active substances which may penetrate into different physiological and metabolic pathways, the nuclear medicine methods may image the tissue function at cellular level and it makes significant contributions to the early diagnosis of many pathophysiologic conditions.

The scintigraphic examinations performed in the nuclear medicine department are the imaging techniques which reveals out all oncologic diseases and anatomic deformations in order to diagnose and treat diseases, has no side effect and ensures assessment and early diagnosis of many diseases using low dose radio active substances and the procedure is performed without trouble and in high sensitivity in addition to no need of patient's effort. İn addition to obtaining information which may not be obtained using any other method, it also offers easiest and comfortable treatment option for patients in many diseases. There is no main organ or system which cannot be imaged using nuclear medicine methods.

Nuclear medicine techniques may provide clinical information with far less radiation dose in comparison with other radiographic techniques. Since significant part of the radiation is not absorbed in the body, the radiation dose exposed to the patient is usually far less than that of a conventional chest X- ray graph. These techniques have extremely wîde safety margin, which enables use of them in children.

Recently, the rapidly advancing division of the nuclear medicine is the cardiovascular imaging. Diagnosis of various heart diseases is possible using cardiac scintigraphy. İt can be diagnosed whether coronary arterial disease is present or not. Nuclear cardiology methods enable the cardiologists to obtain the information easier in comparison with the classical angiography technique, which is difficult to perform.

Nuclear medicine methods are comprised of easy tests, which have no side effects and can be performed without hospitalizing the patient. Thanks to these tests, reliable information on function and structure of many organs can be obtained.
